Last night at the Masonic Hall, Carterton, Miss Waterston gave a film lecture on the introduction of Christianity to Britain by the Apostles St. Paul and St. Simon Zelotes and others. Evidence was produced from Latin and Greek writers of the first five centuries A.D. Baronius quotes a Vatican document in which Joseph of Arimathea and eleven Christians were expelled by the Jews and found sanctuary in Britain, being given by the Welsh King 12 hides of land at Glastonbury. The little church built by these Christians, said the speaker, is recognised by all authorities as the first Christian church and the British nation as the first to become Christian (under Lucius, 179 A.D.). Theodoretus, in A.D. 435, testifies that “Paul liberated from his first captivity at Rome, preached the Gospel to the Britons.” The lecturer quoted also from the Sonnini document which gives St. Paul’s journey to Spain and Britain. The connection of St. Paul with the Royal British Christian family of Caractacus, Claudia and Linus, held hostage at Rome, was shown —the very persons addressed by Paul in 11. Tim. 4, 21, “Eubulus greeteth thee and Pudens, Tinus, Claudia and all the brethren.” A vote of thanks was accorded the lecturer at the conclusion of the address. New Books in Library.
