DIRTY TRICK

PLAYED BY THE GERMANS ON ALLIED WAR PRISONERS USE OF FALSE BROADCAST REPORTS (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 1.25 p.m.) RUGBY, October 7. The South African, General Klopper, who recently reached the Allied lines in Italy, said that by the end of August most of the Allied prisoners had been removed northwards. Isolated from the outside world, the prisoners were over-optimistic when news of the Allied successes came through. The Germans exploited this by broadcasting reports of Allied landings far up the Italian mainland and used a stronglyaccented American voice over the Naples radio. The trick succeeded, and many prisoners made for the places mentioned and were captured by the Germans.
