NAVAL ACTION

BRITISH AND AMERICAN ATTACK ON ENEMY SHIPPING IN NORWAY LIGHT FORCES CHASE ENEM /• DESTROYERS OFF NORTH-WEST COAST OF FRANCE LONDON. October 5. Early yesterday iiioriiiii.fi' the .Home Fleet, together with some United States warships, carried out operations against enemy shipping in Northern Norway, at a small port 150 miles south of Narvik. The squadron included an American aircraft-carrier. Only preliminary reports have been received. Aircraft from the carrier bombed and hit a number of enemy, merchantmen, including an 8000-ton tanker. An Admiralty communique states that three aircraft from the carrier were shot down by anti-aircraft fire. It is possible that some of the crew were captured by the enemy. Enemy aircraft later attacked the naval forces and fighters from the carrier shot two down. No other enemy opposition was encountered. The Navy has also been in action off the north-west coast of France. Light forces attacked a force of enemy destroyers, which made off and the action developed into a chase. Several of the destroyers were hit and two were set on fire. All the British ships returned safely to harbour with very few casualties.
