HEAVY NIGHT ATTACK
CLOSELY FOLLOWS DAY RAID ON FRANKFURT LARGE FIRES LEFT BLAZING. SUCCESSFUL OPERATIONS IN OTHER AREAS. LONDON, October 5. Last night R.A.F. heavy bombers were out in very great strength again. Their main target was the German river port of Frankfurt, which was attacked only 12 hours after a daylight raid by American Flying Fortresses. Large fires were left burning. A small force of Lancasters attacked Ludvigshaven, and Mosquitoes raided other places in north-west Germany. Twelve of our bombers are missing. Last night’s attack was the first exceeding 500 tons to be made on Frankfurt. Three enemy planes fell to one Typhoon squadron yesterday, bringing its total up to 199. A few German raiders were over England last night, bombs being dropped on one place on the east coast. R.A.F. fighters and fighter-bombers kept up their assault on the enemy in France and the Low Countries today. Barges and an oil refinery were attacked. Four enemy aircraft were destroyed.
