ESCAPE TO ALLIES

SOUTH AFRICAN GENERAL. TAKEN PRISONER AT TOBRUK. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10 a.m.) RUGBY, October 5. Major-General H. P. Klopper, commander of South Africa’s Second Division, who was captured when Tobruk surrendered, has escaped from a prison camp at Sulmona, in Italy, and after a 150-mile trek has linked up with the Allied forces. Major-General Klopper escaped when the armistice was announced and spent nearly three weeks walking through the mountains to the Allied lines.
