CARTERTON

SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. J. McKenzie presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School Committee last night. There were also present Messrs W. E. Knowles, P. L. Beere, F. Denbee, C. K. Goodin, G. L. Chatwin and the headmaster, Mr W. Martin. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs R. P. Williams and G. Stark. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £79 7s 7d. The Education Board wrote regarding additional accommodation at the Carterton school, stating that the board’s architect had been instructed to supply a report and an estimate of the cost of removing the Ahiaruhe school and re-erecting it on the Carterton school site. The chairman reported that the Education Board had decided to close the schools under its jurisdiction for the summer vacation on December 15 and re-open them on February 1. The headmaster’s report showed that 407 pupils were on the primary school roll, the largest number for some years. This increase entitled the school to an extra teacher for 1944. The chairman reported that the number of entries for the school calf club competitions were very disappointing. Other schools, he said, had received good entries, Dalefield recording 100 per cent of those attending. ORDER OF DRUIDS TOTARA LODGE In the presence of all the officers and a fair attendance of members the meeting of Totara Lodge No. 3 U.A.O.D. was held last night, Arch Druid Bro H. J. Bassett presiding. The secretary reported that he had arranged for the despatch of Christmas parcels to lodge members serving with the oversea forces in the Middle East and the Pacific. A letter of congratulation is to. be forwarded to Bro S. V. Kay and Mrs Kay on the celebration of their golden wedding. Twenty-eight members uotifiel that they would continue as members of the Friendly Societies Hospital Association. The quarterly return, ended August, showed that there were 223 financial benefit members on the roll. The opening of the Juvenile Lodge will take place on Friday, October 11, at 6.45 p.m. The parents of the Juvenile Lodge will be invited to attend and partake of supper at the conclusion of the opening ceremony. Owing to the lodge room holding a limited number it was resolved that other lodges in No. 1 District be asked to limit representation, at the opening, to there members. Grand Lodge officers will oe in attendance and take part' in the opening ceremony. Bowling Club Dance On Saturday next the Carterton Bowling Club social committee will hold a dance in the State Theatre, Carterton. Prizes of £1 each will be given for dancing competitions. Personal Items First Lieutenant A. Lawrence, of the British fleet air arm, son of Mr and the late Mrs J. A. B. Lawrence, who has been on service in England, has arrived in Carterton on leave. Mrs Jones, of Rhodes Street, Carterton, left yesterday for the Soiuh Island, where she will spend a holiday. Donation to Ambulance Division. The secretary of the Carterton Division of St John Ambulance has received a cheque for £l’o from Miss Beulah Hirst, of Masterton, being the proceeds of a dance recital held in August at Carterton. The thanks of the division are extended to the donor. Dance at Belvedere. On Friday evening a dance will be held in the Belvedere schoolroom, the proceeds from which will be devoted io the purchase of parcels to be forwarded to members of the N.Z. Forces overseas. Clareville Scouts The annual meeting of the Clareville Scouts will be held in the Clareville Hall on Thursday night commencing at 7.30 o’clock. The district scoutmaster will preside and the district commissioner will address the meeting. Parents are invited to be present. S.M. Court The monthly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court will be held in Carterton on Wednesday afternoon.
