BOWLING
MASTERTON CLUB NOTES BY “THE BOWLER.” On Saturday afternoon next many bowlers and their friends will wend their way to the Masterton Bowling Club’s greens, where the official opening of the 45th season will take place. Naturally, bowlers, and especially members of the Masterton Club, are looking forward with pleasure to again taking part in the grand old game. The Masterton Club has always been ' ' noted for its hospitality and sportsmanship and I expect to see the greens well filled with local and visiting bowlers. .The greens reflect great credit on the club’s caretaker, Mr W. Bishop. The surroundings have also had most careful attention. .Bowlers and visitors also will appreciate the extra seating accommodation which has been provided, and at least 70 spectators can now sit down in comfort and witness the games. A handsome . and serviceable seat to accommodate about 16 persons has been donated by club members as a memorial to their late respected and honoured patron, Mr F. H. Dunderdale. No club member, during his lifetime, had assisted the club in so many ways as the late Mr Dunderdale. Messrs G. Hyde, H. H. Daniell, F. Percy, H. B. Thomas, and J. de Castro have this year donated seats, and their generous gifts are, I know, appreciated by the club. • ,' For some years past the Masterton Club has allowed any person, who has not previously been a member of a bowling club, to join the club for the first year on payment of one half the ordinary subscription, and this arrangement will be adhered to during the present season. Intending players will receive every assistance from the older bowlers and from Mr Price, the club’s secretary. I expect to see this season a large influx of new members, as many players have already signified theri intention of joining. The club’s president, Mr H. B. Thomas, and the committee extend a cordial invitation to all bowlers, intending bowlers, and their friends to be present at the opening ceremony which will take place at 2 p.m. and not 1.15 p.m. as on ordinary days. I need hardly remind all members of the Masterton Club that it is customary on opening day to take along a plate of cakes.
