GARDEN PEAS
GERMINATION FAILURES. DUSTING SEED BEFORE SOWING RECOMMENDED. At this time of the year, and particularly during a wet season such as this, home gardeners frequently experience difficulties in obtaining satisfactory germinations from sowings of green peas. If soil conditions are cold and wet following sowing, the peas are inclined to either’ rot in the ground or develop stem rots soon after coming through. The trouble can be satisfactorily and very easily overcome by dusting the peas before sowing with a fungicide such as Agrosan or copper carbonate. The former is probably the more easily obtained. The method is simply to half fill a small tin (say a treacle tin) with the peas, add about half a teaspoonful of the Agrosan, and shake steadily for a few minutes. Although the danger is negligible when doing small garden lots, it is advisable to use a tin with a tightly fitting lid and avoid inhaling the dust, as it is poisonous. The seed is then sown in the ordinary way, and, providing the soil drainage is reasonably good, a perfect germination can be expected..
