The death occurred yesterday at the Buchanan Home, Greytown, of Mr. Adam Beattie, at the age of 83 years. Mrs. V. A. Stowell, Cornwall Street, Masterton, has received advice that her son, Fred Stowell, who has been training in the R.N.Z.A.F. in Canada, has gained his wings and a commission, and is fit and well.
Among a party of sick, wounded and other personnel of the Second N.Z.E.F. who recently returned to New Zealand were Driver Ernest A. Heyder, wife, Mrs. A. G. Heyder, Archer Street, Masterton, and Driver Douglas H. Smith, cousin, Mrs. H. Godden, Mauriceville West.
The parents’ committee of the Pahiatua Boy Scouts has elected the following officers for the ensuing year:— Chairman, Mr J. Hutton; secretary, Mr J. Tolley; treasurer, Mr M. A. Robertson; auditor, Mr P. J. Lloyd; committee, Mesdames P. Bisset, Stewart, Kitchen and Hogg, Messrs G. Mclvor, W. T. Brown.
The Office of War Information, a Washington cablegram reports, has announced that Dr. Allan Nevins, professor of American history at Columbia University, has been appointed special representative of the Office of War Information in New Zealand. He has already departed for New Zealand and will resume his university duties in February.
Miss Alice Eton, whose marriage is to take place on Saturday, was the guest of honour at a gift afternoon held at Tamaihu, Te Ore Ore, on Saturday, the hostesses being Miss E. Brown and Mrs. Eric Shaw. The guest of honour was presented with a shoulder spray of cyclamen and freesias. After afternoon tea had been served, Miss Eton was called upon to open the many useful presents. Mrs. Eric Shaw extended tc Miss Eton the best wishes of all present for her future happiness. Miss Eton suitably responded.
