AIR HAMMERING
OF RETREATING GERMANS MAKING FOR NEW DEFENSIVE LINE. ENGHTH ARMY PROGRESS. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) LONDON, October 2. The British United Press representative with the Fifth Army says strong Allied formations are ceaselessly hammering the Germans who are falling back from the Naples area along the twin roads to Aversa and Caserta, the only retreat routes available to them, and are also attacking roads, bridges and other targets well ahead of the retreating forces. The Vichy radio stated that the Germans evacuated Naples and will establish a new line between the Gulf of Caeta, Benevento and Capua where the Volturno forms a natural barrier. The Eighth Army has occupied the whole of the Gargano Peninsula, which is north of the Gulf of Manfredonia, in the Foggia Province.
