NO ACTION YET
REGARDING AUSTRALIAN OFFICE IN N.Z. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, September 30. No provision is made in the Budget presented to Parliament yesterday for the establishment of an Australian High Commissioner’s office in New Zealand, says the Canberra correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph.” The New Zealand High Commissioner, Mr Berendsen, was appointed several months ago, and there has been considerable comment in Canberra over the Australian Government’s failure to reciprocate. Exchange of diplomatic representation is usually practically simultaneous. The new Estimates, however, while providing for expenditure on all other Australian Legations abroad, make no mention of New Zealand.
The Prime Minister, Mr Curtin, said that the non-appearance of the New Zealand post in the Estimates was not significant. No appointment had yet been made, so it was unnecessary to make provision for expenditure.
