♦ Major T, M. Charters, Canterbury, was re-elected chairman of the Nev; Zealand Navy League War Council at the third annual meeting of the council at Wellington yesterday. The Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, announced yesterday that Brigadier G. Dittmer, D. 5.0., M.8.E., M.C., has taken over command of the Fiji Defence Force from Brigadier J. G. C. Wales, M.C.,’ who is returning to New Zealand. The funeral of the late Mr Herbert Millington, formerly of Masterton and Longbush, took place yesterday afternoon. There was a representative attendance of mourners. The Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich officiated at the chapel and at the graveside. The chief mourners were Messrs C. J. Millington (brother) and W. Millington Junr. (grandson). Private V. J. Hibbard, Messrs J. L. Murray, G. Hyde, F. R. Henry, S. H. Ralph and E. J. Brown were the pall-bearers.
