BOROUGH AFFAIRS
CARTERTON COUNCIL BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. MAYOR TO ATTEND MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE. ("Times-Age” Special.) Mr D. L. Taverner (Mayor) presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council last evening. There were also present: Councillors E. McKenzie, H. Mortensen, W. A. Hart, C. E. Stevens, C. J. DeLacey, Howard E. Jackson and O. W. Wolters. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors L. M. Clark and W. R. Harry. The treasurer’s statement showed a credit balance in the District Fund Account of £745 13s, and in the Gasworks Account of £473 Os 3d. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Councillor Hart, a special order declaring a parcel of land purchased from Mrs M. A. Roberts as a public street was' passed. The P. and T. Department wrote asking for a reduction in the water rate on the post office vacated on account of earthquake damage. The request was declined. The Deputy Chief Warden of the E.P.S., Mr R. W. Roydhouse, reported on the practical trial of an emergency evacuation of the Regent Picture Theatre at a recent performance, some 200 persons being evacuated in 3 minutes. He submitted recommendations which the council decided should be carried out. The Town Clerk reported that a reply had been received from the Picture Company notifying their intention of making certain alterations to the building. The council granted the application of the Friend to Sailors’ Mission to held a shop day in aid of their building fund in Carterton during October. Mr V. Daysh’s tender for the lease of a portion of the Cemetery Reserve was accepted. It was decided that all outstanding earthquake accounts be handed to the borough solicitor for collection. The Ladies’ Hockey Club’s application to have the playing area put in order was left to the Works Committee to deal with. The overseer was requested to inspect the roadway adjacent to Mr Thorne’s property in Lincoln Road, and report to the council. Permission was granted Mr W. R. Harry to pipe the water race running through his property in Rexwood Street, subject to the approval of the overseer, not less than 12 inch pipes to be used. The Mayor was appointed the council’s delegate to attend the Municipal Conference at Napier on February 23 and 24, 1944. The Town Clerk was instructed to write to the following bodies requesting that they appoint a representative to the Carterton Rehabilitation Committee: —County Council, R.S.A., W.W.S. Farmers’ Union, Labour Party, Carterton Businessmen and the Builders. It was decided that the owner of premises in Pembroke Street carry out repairs within one month.
