CARTERTON

TENNIS CLUB \ —— ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the annual meeting of the Carterton Tennis Club, the financial position was considered satisfactory, and arrangements were made to carry on the game as usual. All retiring officers were re-elected with the exception ol the club captain and green committee which two offices had been filled by Mi M. W. Worsfold, who is now in camp. Mr R. R. Barratt was elected a green committee, and the office of club captain will be filled later in the year. The secretary, Miss B. Peters, reported that everything was ready for the commencement of play as soon as weather permitted. Mr Barratt reported that the courts were in excellent order. The caretaker had done excellent work and deserved to be congratulated. It was resolved that a letter of thanks and appreciation be sent to Mr Bruce Robertson, the caretaker, and that he be complimented upon the work done. The club has since l learned with regret that Mr Robertson has had to relinquish his duties on account of ill-health, and steps are being taken to obtain the services of another man. The president reported that he was optimistic in regard to a supply of tennis balls for the coming season. SALVATION ARMY EXCELLENT CONCERT The Salvation Army Hall was packed last night when an excellent programme of items was given by the Masterton Salvation Army Band and Songsters. Brigadier Perry was in charge of the Band and Songsters and, the high class items were a tribute to his skilful tuition. Major Stone, of Masterton, was also present and took part in the proceedings. Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., was chairman and introduced the Band and Songsters. He paid a tribute to the wonderful work the Salvation Army had accomplished and were still doing throughout the world. The padres in the soldiers’ camps overseas and in New Zealand were carrying out their duties in an excellent manner. The various items rendered were warmly applauded and in a great number of instances were encored. The programme was as follows: Hip Ho Ray” song, Mrs Perry taking the solo part, with each individual member of the band (22) being included in the item; band, march; recitation, Paul Henderson; Songsters’ item; cornet duet, Masters R. Wiley and Stan Davis; pianoforte solo, Jean Perry; recitation, Edie Davis; vocal quartette, “Message of the Bells,” Songsters; Band, march; vocal solo, Mrs Orr; “Coronation Day,” Songsters; Band, item; vocal solo, “The Empire’s Marching,” Peter Stone; vocal duet, Mesdames Perry and Orr; recitation, “Sardines,” Jean Perry; novelty item, “Ivy Leaves,” Brigadier Perry; bracket of solos, cornet, euphonium and trombone, with band accompaniment; pianoforte solo, Jean Perry; item by Songsters; solo, “Hold Thou My Hand,” Mrs D. Perry. A band item brought a most pleasant rAusical and vocal programme to a close.

During the afternoon a stall conducted by the Home League members did good business. During this part of the proceedings, Mrs Stunt. Home League secretary, gave a novelty item which was much appreciated. The total takings will be added to the Salvation Army’s effort in connection with the Self Denial Appeal. Captain Herring, of the local corps, was responsible for the arranging of such a popular programme. Votes of thanks were accorded to all those who assisted at the gathering. ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. P.G. Bro. W. McPherson presided over the fortnightly meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows last evening. A vote of condolence was passed to Bros. R. J. and G. R. Grimmer in connection with the recent death of their mother. Sick pay and accounts totalling £7 6s 2d were passed for payment. Two members declared on the sick funds, A report from the Greytown Hospital stated that Bro. Jas. F. Wallis was progressing slowly. The secretary’s action in arranging to send parcels to members serving in the forces overseas was endorsed. Personal Items. The funeral of the late Mrs Magdalene Annie Grimmer took place yesterday after a service at the residence of her son, conducted by the Rev. W. J. Cculing, who afterwards officiated at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs L. J. Harris, B. Sewell, C. K. Goodin, H. A. McPhee, A. J. Lindop and J. Anderson. Carterton Silver Band. , After the practice last evening members of the Carterton Municipal Silver Band were entertained at supper by their parents and well wishers. Councillor DeLacey, a member of the committee, spoke a few words of encouragement to the boys, praising them for the progress they were making with their playing under Bandmaster W. Spooner. He pointed out to them that they were fortunate in having such a patient and painstaking teacher as Mr Spooner. He looked forward to the time when the band would play a programme of music to the people of Carterton at the Band Rotunda at Carrington Park. Cheers were then given for the parents and Mr Spooner. Mrs Archer also addressed the boys. Mr and Mrs Spooner stated that later they would entertain the band members at their residence in Rhodes Street. It It was decided that a ladies’ committee be formed to look after entertainments which might be arranged in the future.

The loud speaker used in connection with announcing the election results at Carterton on Saturday night was in-

stalled by Mr Whisker, of Mr C. K. Goodin's radio and cycle establishment, and was controlled by Mr Whisker.
