MASTERTON SEAT

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE MR G. H. MACKLEY’S CAREER LONG SERVICE WITH RAILWAYS The newly-elected member for Masterton, Mr G. H. Mackley, was born at Port Chalmers in 1883. He joined the Railways Department at Otautau, Southland, as a cadet in January, 1900, and served for 20 years in the capacity of cadet, clerk, relieving officer and stationmaster at various country stations 'throughout New Zealand. Mr Mackley was appointed chief clerk to the General Manager in 1928; in 1931 he was made assistant General Manager, and in November, 1932, he was appointed acting General Manager. His appointment as General Manager was confirmed in 1933. Prior to his transfer to the Head Office, Mr Mackley was seconded for special duties as the Department’s advocate before the Appeal Board. In 1935 he was the recipient of the Silver Jubilee Medal and in 1935 of the Coronation Medal. In 1935 the King conferred upon Mr Mackley the dignity of a Serving Brother of the Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem and in 1938 he was appointed to be a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George. Apart from his railway service Mr Mackley has interested himself in many activities. He was for a time a member of the executive council of the New Zealand Railway Officers’ Institute, secretary of the Kaikohe

Patriotic Committee, treasurer of the Kaikohe Chamber of Commerce, secretary of the Kaikohe School Committee, secretary of the Whangarei Regatta Committee and president of the Public Service Sports Association. He is also a member of several sports clubs, including the Masterton and Wellington Racing Clubs, and for a brief period was organising secretary of the Bay of Islands branch of the Farmers’ Union. While he was stationed at Kaikohe he took the initiative in forming the Kaikohe Co-opera-tive Dairy Factory. He is now managing director of the Whakatane Paper Mills, Ltd., and is also a director of Macduff's, Ltd.
