APPROACHING DNIEPER ON BROAD FRONT RAINS TURNING ROADS INTO MORASSES SOME PROGRESS IN SMOLENSK SECTOR. TOWN SEVEN MILES FROM CITY TAKEN. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.55 p.m.) LONDON, September 24. Over roads turned into morasses by heavy rains, General Konev’s motorised cavalry, south-east of Poltava, are approaching the Dnieper on a broad front, says the British United Press. The Russians have advanced 20 miles towards Kremenchung, after capturing Poltava yesterday. A stream of troops, lorries, guns and tanks is passing southward through Poltava. The “Red Star” reports that the Russians first reached the Dnieper through Novomoskosk, 12 miles from Dnepropetrovsk, while strong forces have since reached the eastern bank at other points. Reuter's Moscow correspondent says five Red Army columns are advancing against Smolensk, over a semi-circle running from north to south. The Germans are reported to be evacuating Katyn, 15 miles west of Smolensk. Another 430 inhabited places were occupied by the Russians during the day, says tonight’s Russian communique and advances of from six to 13 miles have been made on all the offensive fronts. The big district centres of Tsarichanka, Kasilka and Richitolvila were captured in the Poltava region. Only small advances have been made in the Smolensk sector, but Karelli, seven miles north-east of Smolensk, was taken. Another message states that in their retreat on the Dnieper the Germans are leaving behind much material and equipment.
