CANADIAN BACON
SUPPLIES FOR GREAT BRITAIN. OTTAWA, August 28. Canadian producers expect to fulfill their bacon agreement with Britain. An objective of 675,000,000 pounds was set for the year ending in November. This meant that 7.500,000 hogs had to be provided and that despite record shipments the previous year producers had to go still higher. Canada has tried to give Britain all the bacon she has needed since the war began. In the contract year 1939-40, 330,000,000 pounds were needed; in 1940-41, 425,000,000; in 1941-42, 600,000,000 pounds. “Some people thought we were too ambitious when we increased our agreement with Britain in 1942-43,” says Dr. G. S. H. Barton, Deputy Minister of Agriculture. But reports indicate that, assisted by last year’s good feed crops, producers are coming through. The 1942-43 Bacon Agreement represents 85 per cent of Britain’s bacon requirements.
