WON BY LABOUR
ALL FOUR MAORI SEATS SIR A. T. NGATA DEFEATED. DETAILS OF POLLING. (By Telegraph—Press Asso nation.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The four Maori seats in the House of Representatives were all won by the Labour Party candidates at the elections held yesterday in the electorates, following the usual custom of holding these polls the day before the general election. The surprise of the polling was the defeat in Eastern Maori of the political veteran and father of Parliament, Sir Apirana Ngata, the National Party candidate. His successful opponent was the Labour Party candidate, Mr T. Omana. They were the only candidates in this electorate. The other three Maori seats were retained by Labour. At the time of the dissolution Western Maori was held for the Government by Mr H. T. Ratana and Southern Maori by the Hon. E. T. Tirikatene, who were both re-elected. Northern Maori was vacant following the death of the Hon. P. K. Paikea, whose son, Mr T. P. Paikea, has been returned as his successor. There were nine candidates for this scat, six for Western, two for Eastern and four for Southern, a total of 21.
The returns given below include the service votes to hand up to last night. Only in the case of Eastern Maori could these votes have had any bearing on the result. There are also a few small civilian returns to come for 'some of the electorates, but they cannot affect any of the results.
