EXPLODED LIKE BOMB
THE ITALIAN BATTLESHIP ROMA 1,400 MEMBERS OF CREW KILLED. FIVE HUNDRED BADLY INJURED. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, September 24. Italian survivors from the battleship Roma state that 1,400 members of the crew were killed and 500 badly burned after German planes scored a direct hit on the ship’s funnel. The Associated Press Madrid correspondent quotes survivors as saying that the Rpma exploded like a bomb, covered the sea with tons of blazing oil and immediately began to sink. A cruiser and five gunboats stopped and picked up survivors.
