ATTACKS ON JAPANESE PACIFIC BASES DECLARATION BY ADMIRAL KING. PROMISE OF SHATTERING BLOWS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.50 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 23. “The recent attacks against Marcus Island and the Gilbert Islands are only the shape of things to come,” said Admiral King, addressing the American Legion Convention. He added that the Navy’s aim was to strike shattering blows against the enemy with all the weapons that can be brought to bear, synchronised, and co-ordinated with an overwhelming assault. He emphasised the importance of the Navy’s swiftly growing air arm, which was striking hard against enemy bases, particularly in the Pacific.
