DAMAGED BUILDINGS
CONDITION OF POST OFFICE. COMMENT BY BOROUGH COUNCILLOR The closing of the Opera House to the public until it was restored to specified earthquake-resisting standards brought forth some comment at last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council on the condition of the Masterton Post Office. “The Public Works engineer and our engineer let the Post Office carry on. Which is the more damaged,” asked Councillor C. E. Grey, “the Post Office or the Opera House?” I think the Public Works engineer influences our engineer to some extent 1 . Thousands more go through the Post Office in a week than go into the Opera House in a month.” The Borough Engineer. Mr C. R. Mabson: "I have no jurisdiction over any Government, building.” Councillor Grey: ‘’Surely you have got some say. We should have." Mr Mabson: “The Government does not even apply for permits.” The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan: “They do not submit to our bylaws."
