A former Mayor of Hamilton, Mr J. R. Fow, died on Saturday at the age of 74. The death occurred at Rotorua on Sunday of Mr Thomas Monkley, who was well known in the trade union movement in Wellington for many years. He was a South African War veteran. The esteem in which Mrs A. Mutrie is held was indicated yesterday afternoon when a large number of friends gathered at her residence in Hessey Street, Masterton, to celebrate her 90th birthday. Mrs Mutrie received many artistic floral gifts. Mrs J. M. Coradine recalled that when she was Mayoress in 1914 her husband crowned Mrs Mutrie queen of the carnival. The death is reported from Apia of Mr James E. Wallace, aged 78. He arrived in Samoa in 1915 with the relief force and served till the termination of the Great War, attaining the rank of lieutenant. He returned to New Zealand in 1920 when he was demobilised, and went back six months later. He had resided there continuously since then. He was -among the first pupils to attend Wellington College.
