PROTEST ACTION
MARLBOROUGH PRODUCTION COUNCIL LONG DISPUTE WITH MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE. REINSTATEMENT OF SECRETARY DEMANDED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) BLENHEIM, This Day. After a dispute with the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Barclay), lasting for over twelve months, the Marlborough Primary Production Council last night decided to suspend all activities unless its secretary-organiser was reinstated by 5 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday). The chairman described the position as intolerable, saying that the secretary, Mr E. B. Fitzpatrick, had-the confidence of every producers’ organisation and all producers, but was opposed by one trade union, not connected with primary production. The council had explored every avenue, but had found itself blocked at every turn. The charges levelled against the secretary had been fully answered, but his salary payment had been stopped by the Department for 2J months. A case of Ministerial interference, reversing three decisions of the Appeal Board, was also cited. The council has gone into recess until the secretary’s reappointment is authorised by the Prime Minister.
