GERMANS PROBABLY UNABLE TO DEFEND ISLAND. (Received This Day,. 11.25 a.m.) LONDON, September 20. Italian troops answered the Berlin radio appeal to help defend Sardinia against Allied invasion by driving the Germans from the island. This is a good illustration of Italian feeling, says the “Daily Telegraph’s” Algiers correspondent. The Germans are believed to have had only enough troops in Sardinia to protect the airfields. Two Italian divisions forced them to withdraw to Corsica across the two-mile Bonifacio Strait. Military observers in London say the German withdrawal to Corsica can be only a temporary expedient. The Germans are believed already to be preparing to evacuate the island Once the Allies occupy Sardinia and assemble a reasonably strong air force there, the Germans’ position in Corsica will be-

come untenable. Sardinia has four main airfields, five satellite airfields, one seaplane base and three flying-boat anchorages. According to an announcement by General Giraud, over the Algiers' radio, following upon the withdrawal of the Germans from Sardinia to Corsica, French commando troops have landed on Corsica. The radio added that events have taken a favourable turn.
