SOLWAY COLLEGE

CONCERT ON SATURDAY EVENINGEXCELLENT STANDARD SET. The very large audience at Solway College on Saturday night, in spite of the distance from town, which filled the hall, was a tribute to the reputation which the college has for its concerts. Saturday night’s programme was in aid of the Knox Church Restoration Fund The standard of the singing is stated to have never been excelled, and the audience were thrilled .particularly by the mass singing of “Creation’s Hymn,” “Jerusalem,” and the two carols, “How Far Is It to. Bethlehem?” and “Away in the Manger.” Some of the soloists were of outstanding merit, in particular Mopreen Franklin and Nancy Fordyce, whose rendering of “Cherry Ripe” was such that an encore was demanded. Great pains had been taken for the setting of the fantasy, “Awakening of Spring,” which featured songs, ballets, verse-speaking and mime, and filled the first half of the programme. Other items included mass singing, “Song of Enchantment,” “Three Young Maids” and two carols; items by the percussion band (juniors), which included two items by junior conductresses; solos. Nancy Fordyce, “Blow, Wind, Blow,” and “Cherry Ripe”; club swinging, Margaret and Dorothy Gideon; songs, Mooreen Franklin; duet, Noeline Esau and Audrey Cooper; sextette, • negro spiritual songs; “Fight the Good Fight,” “Land of Hone and Glory,” “Nazareth,” etc. (soloist, Dawn Galloway); “The King” (Elgar). At the conclusion of the concert, Mr G. W. Morice moved a vote of thanks to Miss Mcßae (principal), Miss McDonald apd the girls who took part. The motion was carried by acclamation. . ‘
