SUCCESSFUL SHOP DAY HELD BY LABOUR PARTY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Car ter ton committee of the Labour Party yesterday held a very successful shop day. All the articles found a ready sale. A competition for a dinner was won by Mrs R. Banks, of Anderson’s Line, Carterton. A competition for potatoes was won by Mrs Whale. The takings amounted to £55. LEAGUE OF MOTHERS “FATHERS’ NIGHT” Despite unfavourable weather conditions there was a good attendance at the League of Mothers “Fathers’ Night” held in St Andrew’s Hall. Songs which were much appreciated were contributed by Messrs H. B. Keenan, M. S. Ardrey, Mrs Worsfold and Misses L. Knutson and Barron, Mrs F. G. Bath and Miss Armstrong playing the accompaniments. The president, Mrs R. H. Every, welcomed the Rev Father V. J. McGlone, who gave a most interesting and humorous address on the impressions he had gained while visiting Paris. He vividly described the Arc de Triomphe, the stained glass windows of SaintChapelle Cathedral and the architecture of the beautiful Notre Dame Cathedral. Mr P. L. Beere thanked the speaker for his address, his remarks being endorsed by Mr J. L. Harris. North-West Gale. Yesterday a strong north-west gale accompanied by heavy rain was experienced. Minor damage is reported to have been done by the wind. Women’s Division Dance. The local Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union will hold a dance in the State Theatre tonight. The pro-, ceeds will be used to provide parcels for prisoners of war. Rediscovery of Lost Israel, On Thursday night at the Masonic Hall, Miss Waterston gave a film lecture, showing, said the lecturer, “irrefutable evidence from the New Testament the identity of the lost tribes of Israel.” The lecturer showed thab Peter and James’s epistles were addressed specifically to the tribes of Israel wanderingg in Asia and Europe, Turkey and Greece, i.e.. the 721 B.C. dispersion, quite distinct from the 70 A.D. dispersion of the Jews. Jesus Christ mentioned these Israelites as the lost sheep of the House of Israel. The lecturer quoted the chief Rabbi of London, Dr. Hertz, who stated that the Jews came from Judah. Benjamin and Levi, and that he looks forward to the future gathering of all the tribes. On Thursday night next Miss Waterston will give a lecture entitled “Who Brought Christianity to Britain? Joseph, of Arimathea, 37 A.D.” Motor Cars Stolen. A car belonging to Mr Jansen, of Martinborough, which was parked in High Street, was stolen yesterday. Shortly after, a car parked in Broadway and belonging to Mr Bannister of Masterton, was also stolen. Personal. Messrs Prentice and Biass, of Masterton, will attend a social gathering of members of the Carterton branch of the R.S.A. on Monday. <
