JAPANESE BASE TAKEN BY AUSTRALIANS END MADE OF ORGANISED RESISTANCE IN HUON GULF AREA OF NEW GUINEA. LONDON, September 17. Australian troops have captured the Japanese New Guinea base of Lae. The town was entered by the Australians at 11 o’clock yesterday morning and the latest communique says they have now overwhelmed the main enemy resistance. A continuous air bombardment of Lae during the past week had reduced the base to a shambles. The fall of Lae means an end of organised Japanese resistance in the Huon Gulf area of New Guinea.
