LAVAL AND HITLER

? THE FOX AND THE WOLF. An anecdote is told by “La Marseillaise,” the French weekly published in London, which is a fine example of flattery and treachery. Telling of his meeting with Hitler. Laval is reported as having said: I realised what a burden and what responsibilities Hitler bore on his shoulders. I said to him, “You have been great in war, be as great in peace.” At this he tools both my hands in his, and with tears in his eyes replied: “I should like so much to come to an understanding with France.” Early next morning I was awakened by a knock on my door. Hitler had sent to inform me that he had given orders for the German troops, to cross the demarkation line and occupy the rest of France. What a shock this was to me!
