HONOURING THE FLAG AN IMPRESSIVE CEREMONY (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor (Mr J. W. Card), the Councillors and the Town Clerk were present at the ceremony of honouring the flag at the Featherston School yesterday afternoon in connection with the surrender of Italy.' The children sang a verse of the New Zealand National Anthem which was followed by a prayer given by the headmaster, Mr Jones.
The. flag was then broken and the children recited the following verse: “The flag stands for our country and our people, for our love of truth, justice, freedom and democracy, in which we are united through the person of our King with all other members of the British Commonwealth of Nations.” After a brief silence for the fallen service men had been observed an address was given by Mr J. W. Card. The singing of God Save the King brought the ceremony, which was most impressive, to a close. LABOUR PARTY EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE. The Labour Party held a very successful euchre party and dance in the Town Hall last evening, when there was a large attendance. The winners at euchre were: Ladies, Mrs Elder 1, Mrs Charles and Mrs A. Burt, equal 2. Men, Mr Morris and Mr Dick Holland, equal 1. The consolation prizes were won by Mrs Wilson and Cpl. Smith. The music for the dance was supplied by Mrs Ashton’s Orchestra. Mr Ashton was M.C. A competition was won by Miss Esme Saba and a cake by Sergt. Longley. Mr Ben Roberts briefly addressed the gathering and was enthusiastically received. Supper was served by the ladies’ committee. RED CROSS SOCIETY ENJOYABLE GATHERING. A very enjoyable time was spent at a euchre tournament held at the Red Cross Society rooms on Monday, Mrs O’Neale being the card winner. Competitions were won by Mrs Elliot and Mrs Carter. Donations were received from Mesdames F. Benton, Feast, R. Hardy, Kinsey, Wakely, Carlyon, Sadler, Sharp, N. Matthews, Lawson, Miss I Goodrick and Clive Benton. Personal Items. The death occurred yesterday of Miss Edna Stuart, daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Stuart, of Featherston, at the age of 18 years. COSY THEATRE “MOONLIGHT IN BALI.” ■ On Wednesday night there will be shown the excellent comedy-drama, “Moonlight in Bali,” in which the chief 1 roles are taken by Madeleine Carroll, Allan Jones, Fred Mac Murray and Akim Tamiroff. It is a picture which provides plenty of fun and romance.
