WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING AT NIREAHA. (“Times-Age’’ Special.) The monthly meeting of the Nireaha VZomen’s Institute was well attended. Mrs Terry welcomed those present, including a visitor, Mrs Anderson. The motto for the month was: “If you have a talent for criticism, don’t fail to use it on yourself.” Letters of appreciation were received from Drivers W. Terry and J. Payne and O.S. Roy Brooks for parcels forwarded and also from the parents of R. Hodder and W. Davidson, who are prisoners of war. A donation of £1 was made to the Makopai Leper Fund. The Soldiers’ Parcel Fund benefited to the extent of 18s 7d as the result of the produce stall held. The knitted garments handed in by members in August and September were: Four scarves, 5 pairs of mittens, 1 cramwell flying jacket, 2 balaclavas, and 1 long-sleeved pullover. The competition winners were: — Marmalade: Mrs O’Neil and Mrs W. Houston, equal, 1; Mrs Hansen, 2; Mrs Hawkins, 3. Oven cloth: Mrs Terry, 1 and 2; Mrs J. Drysdale, 3. Vegetables: Mrs Hawkins, 1; Mrs Wilkins, 2; Mrs A. Houston, 3. Small bloom: Mrs J. Drysdale, 1; Mrs Hawkins, 2; Mrs W. H. Drysdale, 3. Large bloom: Mrs Hawkins, 1; Mrs A. Houston, 2; Mrs Hansen, 3. The competitions for next month will be: —Best vegetable and bloom, homemade soap, sponge sandwich, filled, but not iced. The hostesses were Mesdames A. and W. Houston. Personal Items. A very enjoyable time was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs H. Smith, Newman Read, when Wireless Operator Max Smith was the guest of honour. Mr Olsen (Mayor), Mrs Olsen and Mr Wakelin (Town Clerk) were among those present. The Mayor, on j behalf of the citizens of Eketahuna, asked the guest of honour to accept a well-filled wallet, and Miss M. Anderson, president of the Borough Ladies’ Soldiers’ Comforts Committee, presented him with a parcel of woollen comforts. The funeral of the late ' Mr John Brown took place in the Eketahuna Cemetery on Saturday afternoon. A service in St. Cuthbert's Church was ( conducted by the Rev. J. C. W. Mutter, who also officiated at the graveside. The pall-bearers were: Messrs W. and L. Olsen (Pahiatua). W. Hooper, R. Gallagher, L. W. Willis and A. Ramsay. The beautiful wreaths included one from the staff of the Eketahuna County Council. Tffrs J. Jewett is visiting Wellington.
Mr Albert Smith, who had been on a visit to Masterton and Eketahuna, has returned to Palmerston North.
Thanksgiving Service.
There was a good attendance at St. Cuthbert’s Church on Sunday evening when a thanksgiving service was held, the preacher being the Rev. J. C. W. Mutter, who took for his sermon, “Be Strong and of Good Courage.”
