METHODIST CHURCH LADIES’ GUILD EFFORT. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the annual effort of the Methodist Ladies’ Guild the various stalls were laden with useful articles and the stallholders were kept busy. At the end of the day practically everything had been sold. The financial result was satisfactory. ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. • Bro. W. McPherson, V.G., presided at the fortnightly meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows, Manchester Unity. Sick visitors reported that P.G. Bro. Jas. F. Wallis was making progress towards recovery from his serious illness. Sick pay totalling £5 was ordered to be paid. A circular from the M.U.1.0.0.F. stated that 3,550 members in the armed forces were having their contributions to the Sick and Funeral Fund paid from the War Members' Relief F;md, at a cost of 12s 3d per member per quarter. The actual rate of the pay-out at the present time totalled £lO,OOO per year, and there was a tendency for this amount to increase. SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING Oi : MEMBERS. Mr H. J. McKenzie presided at the monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School Committee last night. There were also present: Messrs P. L. Beere, W. E. Knowles, F. Denbee, C. K. Goodin, G. Stark, R. Williams and G. L. Chatwin. Votes of condolence were passed to Mr and Mrs W. Martin and Mr and Mrs Geo. Brown who had suffered bereavements through the war. Members stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect. The treasurer reported a credit balance at the bank of £157 5s lOd.
The secretary of the Wellington Education Board wrote in reply to correspondence from the committee requesting more accommodation for children and suggesting a new building for the infant classes. The letter stated that the department regretted that it was unable to give favourable consideration to the proposal at the present time. The headmaster reported that the primary school roll was 398 and the secondary department 41. The secretary was instructed to write thanking the Education Board for the expeditious manner in which they had carried out the work in connection with the basketball area and the repairs to desks, etc. The Home and Schools Association was thanked for its generous contribution to the cost of the basketball area. PLUNKET SOCIETY MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. At the monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Plunket Society there were present: Mesdames Armstrong, Candy, Dyer, Montgomery and Trapp. Apologies for . absence were received from Mesdames Steel and Robinson. The nurse reported for August as follows: —New cases, mothers, 4; babies, 4. Visits to homes: New cases, 10; old cases 60; children, 30. Visits to rooms: Adults, 99; babies, 79; children, 30. Appreciation was expressed at the donation of a beautiful child’s patchwork dressing gown by Mrs C. Teal. It was decided that “Daffodil Day at Middle Run be on September 25, and the street sale on October 1. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs J. Johnson, of Carterton, left yesterday for Gisborne, where Mr Johnson will join the railway clerical staff. Mr Johnson, who will commence his duties on Monday next, recently returned from service overseas. Scout Dance. The dance held in the State Theatre, Carterton, under the auspices of the Carterton Boy Scouts was a success both socially and financially. The music was supplied by Mr T. Udy s orchestra. Much appreciated extras were played by Miss E. Robinson and Messis C. K. Goodin and Mackintosh. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs V. L. Robinson. Mr Geo.. James was M.C. Sheep Worrying. Mr J. G| Oates, Parkvale, has suffered considerable loss of sheep and lambs on his property as the result of the sheep being worried by dogs. Mr Oates states that all dogs found on his property will be shot. Poison has also been laid.
