VICTORY PARADE
NOT FAVOURED BY COUNTY COUNCIL. COMPLETION OF PATRIOTIC FUND URGED. “I am not in favour of the parade, and think, like the Mayor of Masterton, that it would be a more practical celebration if we completed our Patriotic Fund Appeal quota,” observed the chairman of the Masterton County Council, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee, at today's meeting of the council, when a request was received from the Government that a victory parade should be arranged for next Saturday. ‘There is no sense in the request,” said Mr Lee. "We cannot expect farmers to down tools and take part in a parade at 10 o’clock in the morning.” Councillor P. R. Welch: “It is all rot.” The Clerk, Mr J. C. D. Mackley, said a man from the Ministry of Works was travelling around designing floats for the parade. Councillor Welch said the fall of Italy was a step forward, but it was too scon to hold victory parades. There was a probability of stiff fighting against the Germans in Italy.
“We have more important work to do than making floats.” said Councillor J. V/. Colquhoun. The matter then lapsed.
