4 The death occurred in Wellington on Saturday of Mr John Down, formerly superintendent of Mt. Crawford prison. Mr Down was born in Auckland in 1872 and joined the prison service in 1897 as bricklayer at the old Terrace prison in Wellington. Mr Henry Barnes, who till his retirement a few years ago was manager of Terawhiti Station, Makara County, died recently. He was a son of the late Mr Thomas Barnes, one of the earlier pioneers of New Zealand, and was born at Opau, Makara, in 1867. Mr A. R. Masters, Stratford, has been elected president of the New Zealand Master Grocers’ Federation, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr W. F. Deverson, and Mr J. H. Carver, Auckland, has been elected vice-pre-sident.
