NO RELIEF
OF SYDNEY MEAT FAMINE. CAUSED BY ABATTOIR STRIKE. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) SYDNEY, September 12. Sydney’s meat famine will continue next week following the unexpected rejection of a settlement proposal by the workers on strike at the Homebush abattoirs. The Federal Acting-Minister of Labour, Mr Holloway, will arrive in Sydney tomorrow to attempt a settlement of the strike, the effect of which is being felt by the whole civilian population of Sydney. Little meat was available to housewives who lined up in queues yesterday for weekend supplies. Most of the small-goods shops were unable to cope with the big demand for poultry, eggs, and tinned meats. Customers complained bitterly of excessive prices. One shopper was offered a hind quartetr of mutton for 19s. 6d. and small uncooked fowls were priced up to 10s. 6d. The continuation of the strike means that shops have to rely on supplies from country killing centres—about t 55 per cent, of normal. An attempt may p be made by the strikers to cut off or . restrict country supplies to the metro- ' politan area.
