CAPTAIN COOK RELIC
RING FOR QUEEN OF TONGA. “I recently gave a broadcast talk in ‘'the British Home Service on the Kingdom of Tonga, the date of the talk being selected as coinciding with the 25th Anniversary of Queen Salote’s Accession to the throne. This talk has had a most delightful sequel. A few days afterwards, I received a letter from a clergyman in Northamptonshire —previously unknown to me—the Rev. Greville Vaughan Cooke, saying that he and his mother had in their possession a ring that belonged to Captain James Cook who, of course, gave to Tonga its other name of the Friendly Islands. He was so good as to say that he so much enjoyed the talk and appreciated what the Queen and her people were doing for the Empire’s Effort, that he wished me to accept Captain Cook’s ring, which had long been in their possession, in order to send it to her Majesty Queen Salote. I replied thanking him and his mother warmly, and saying that I should have the greatest pleasure in doing so.”— Sir Harry Luke, K.C.M.G., ex-Gover-nor of Fiji and ex-High Commissioner for the Western Pacific, in a 8.8. C. talk.
