VICTORY OVER ITALY
PRACTICAL CELEBRATION SUGGESTED BY THE MAYOR. COMPLETION OF PATRIOTIC FUND QUOTA. A practical, way of celebrating the victory over Italy was suggested by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, this morning, when he urged residents of the district to complete Wairarapa’s quota in the Patriotic Fund appeal. “In this hour of triumph over Italy,” Mr Jordan said, “in addition to our band-playing and flag-waving, I should like to urge that we in this district do our rejoicing in a more practical way. and make it an occasion for filling up our quota at once for the National Patriotic Fund, so that, in the last desperate round in this struggle for freedom and justice, there will be no lessening of the amenities provided by us for the members of our magnificent fighting forces, and no lack of support for their services and sacrifices. Contributions, great and small, should be forthcoming to this end.” Mr Jordan added that before deciding on any local celebrations he was awaiting receipt of details of the proposed parades on September 18, particulars concerning which, according to Mr Fraser’s statement, were being forwarded to local bodies. Additional donations to the Patriotic Fund are acknowledged by the Town Clerk, Mr G. T. O’Hara Smith, as follows: — £ s d G. Masters (additional) 3 15 0 A. H. Ahrens (additional) .... 8 3 8 T. WELLINGTON, This Day. “It has been decided that the most fitting manner in which New Zealand’s part in the whole war effort can be symbolised is by the holding of big parades wherever possible in all centres, large and small, throughout New Zealand on Saturday week, September 18,” said the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, in a further statement last night :on the arrangements for celebrating the capitulation of Italy. a Mr Fraser added that he wcvild seek the co-operation—as when the United Nations Flag Day parades were held some time ago—of mayors and chairmen of local bodies throughout New Zealand, and of all those concerned with the war effort. Local authorities would be communicated with about details, but meanwhile this iannouncement should be regarded as a preliminary request. The Prime Minister said that, in order to make such parades symbolic of the whole of New Zealand’s war effort, there would be full representation of the various armed services and the merchant seamen and women’s war-or-ganisations, and in the production section of the parades the keynote would be the representation of the industrial war effort in such a manner as would display the whole range of war production.
