A link with the pioneering days o: the Wairarapa was severed with the death, at the age of 100 years, of Mrs Martha Jane Diamond, which occurred at the residence of her daughter, Mrs John McKenzie, High Street, Carterton last night. Mrs Diamond was born on December 2, 1842, at Clonmel, County Waterford. Ireland, of Cornish parentage. Her father was a civil engineer engaged in work for the British Government in Ireland at the time of her birth. At fourteen years of age, Mrs Diamond sailed for Melbourne, Australia, with her parents. Mrs Diamond married a gold mining engineer, Mr Joseph Diamond, and arrived in New Zealand in 1877 with her husband and young family. Soon after their arrival at Wellington the family travelled by bullock wagon to a farm property Mr Diamond had taken up in Hilton Road, Carterton. After her husband died, some years ago, the farm was disposed of, and Mrs Diamond went to live with her daughter, Mrs John McKenzie.
The' sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to the members of Mrs Diamond’s family who survive her. They are Mesdani.-s M. Hart (Palmerston North), H. Hall (Wellington), John McKenzie (Carterton), A. E. Hall (Carterton), E. M. Golder (Wellington) and Mr Charles Diamond (Hastings). Members of the family who predeceased Mrs Diamond were Messrs Arthur, Edward and Sydney Diamond and Miss Mary Diamond. There are nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. One grandson, Corporal Warwick Hall, died of wounds on Crete. Election Address. The speaker received a very attentive hearing and was warmly applauded. Before the conclusion, Mr J. J. Maher, who had been sneaking at Gladstone, entered the hall and received an ovation. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Holyoake. A vote of confidence in the National Parly was carried unanimously, and to Mr Holyoake was extended best wishes for his success in the contest for the Pahiatua seat. Personal Items. Mrs Geo.
