CHANNEL ACTION
SUCCESSFUL ATTACKS MADE BY BRITISH LIGHT FORCES. ENEMY VESSEL TORPEDOED & OTHERS DAMAGED. ■ (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.32 a.m.) RUGBY, September 5. An Admiralty communique states: “While on patrol off the French coast early this morning, light coastal forces of the Royal Navy, under Lieutenant-Command-er Peter Scott, engaged a large group of armed mine-sweepers with gunfire. A number of attacks were carried out against a strong and determined defence. Towards the close of this action, which had continued intermittently for two hours, the enemy were reinforced by a formation of heavily,-armed patrol vessels. His Majesty’s ships again pressed their attacks and a torpedo-hit was obtained on an enemy patrol vessel. Two other patrol vessels were severely damaged, one of them being left burning. All his Majesty’s ships returned safely to harbour, having suffered only, slight casualties.
