WAIRARAPA & EAST COAST DRENCHED FAIRLY EXTENSIVE FLOODING IN SOME PARTS. STOCK LOSSES NOT SEVhxuL Heavy rain driven by a strong southerly gale caused fairly extensive flooding in the Wairarapa during the weekend. Temperatures were low, and snow and sleet fell in Masterton on Saturday. The flooding was not, however, of a serious nature, as farmers had had time to remove stock from low-lying country. Many lambs and in some cases ewes were lost, but no serious d losses are reported. The Waiohine River was in full flood and caused the Maungatarere River to back up and inundate the main highway north of the Black Bridge. When, the flooding was at its peak yesterday morning the roadway was several feet under water. The waters receded later and traffic was able to get through. The Ruamahanga and the\Waipoua rivers were in high, flood, buf. did not cause much damage. The Wangaehu River flooded the roadway about five miles out, and a slip blocked the road eight miles out. The slip was cleared today. The flood in the Wangaehu was one of the biggest known. For the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday, 2.83 inches were recorded at Waingawa, and 18 points were recorded for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. today. At Tinui the river was in high flood, but settlers were able to move stock. A number of lambs were lost.
