CARTERTON
WOMEN’S FRANCHISE JUBILEE CELEBRATED. (“Times-Age” Special.) A large number of people attended a meeting in Carterton yesterday afternoon to celebrate the jubilee of the women’s franchise in New Zealand. Mrs L. R. Maitland, president of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, welcomed the presidents or other women’s organisations present, Mrs Tyler (W.C.T.U.), Miss Wolters (Womens Institute) and Mrs H. E. Ordish (W.W.S.A.). Musical items, which were greatly approciated were rendered by Miss M. Lawrence, Mrs Linton. Miss T. Fisher, and Mrs Hodder. Mrs K. Reid and Miss C. Hayes were the accompanistes. .. Miss C. Kirk, of Wellington, was the speaker and referred to the difficulties experienced by the pioneers of the movemen in New Zealand. Woman’s work was only half done when she fitted out her children for the world; the other half was making the world more fit for them to live ln * Mrs Tyler thanked the speaker for her address. Flowers were presented to Miss Kirk and shoulder sprays to the other ladies on the platform. Mrs Major Dick (Masterton) urged women to use their privilege rightly and not betray the trust that had been so hard to obtain. Service of Prayer. Three hundred people were present at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, yesterday afternoon to take part in the service of prayer. Those who assisted at the service were the Revs W F. Stent, W. J. Couling and R. Grice and Captain Hering. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, read the lesson. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs J. Johnson, who have been visiting Westport, have returned to Carterton.
