4 MASTERTON BRANCH. MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Women’s Christian Temperance Union was well attended, Miss Tankersley presiding. The Temperance fact reads as follows: —“We could carry on well if alcohol were wiped out of existence. We could manage to clean the skin with something else. There would be nothing lost in the treatment of disease.” —Arthur Evans, 0.8. E., M.S., F.R.C.S. Two new members were initiated. The Rev. J. Dickie addressed the meeting on “The Confessions of Alcohol.” The importance placed upon this universal beverage at all public dinners, receptions and kindred functions, is a matter for deep concern when it is considered the most devastating force in human and economic life,” he said. In quoting Thos. Bracken, the speaker said: “It is the vilest fiend of all.” John Bright said: “If England could be rid of drink for ten years she would become such a paradise man could hardly realise.” The hostesses were Mrs Miller and Miss Tankersley. Arrangements were completed for local celebrations in connection with the golden jubilee of the women’s franchise movement.
