CARTERTON
PERSONAL ITEMS (“Times-Age” Special.) Mrs Guy Booth, of Lower Hutt, who has been staying with her mother at Carrington, returned home yesterday. Mrs Smith, of Broadway, who has been visiting Dannevirke, returned home yesterday. Trial and Crucifixion. Last night, at the Masonic Hall, Miss Waterston gave an address on the document of Pontius Pilate to Tiberius Gaecar concerning the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ, which was found in the “Archko volume” of manuscripts at Constantinople, containing the official reports of the Roman Governors to the Caesars, and translated by Drs. McIntosh and Twyman, of the Antiquarian Lodge, Genoa, Italy. The report proved to be of extreme interest, as it was an outside, unbiased witness to the life, miracles, death and Resurrection of Jesus the Nazarene. Pilate shows that Jesus did nothing worthy of death, but the Jews, filled with envy and hatred, thirsted for his death and forced his hand. Pilate records the phenomena of the crucifixion day—the darkness and the earthquake—and says that Jerusalem was aghast at what happened. Pilate, on request of the chief priest, sealed the tomb of Jesus and set a watch of 100 men. Two men of this guard gave their report of the resurrection. The subject for next Thursday will be “The Destiny of the Anglo-Saxon Race.” Tribal Committee Dance. Tomorrow night, at the State Theatre, Carterton, the Carterton Tribal Committee will hold its fortnightly dance. On the programme is a statue waltz for which a prize of 10s will be given to the winners. Udy’s orchestra will supply the music, and a good supper will be provided. School Committee Meeting. Owing to unforseen circumstances the monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School Committee, which was to have been held on Monday night, has been postponed until Monday, September 13. Carrington Rainfall. Mr J. A. Roberts, Carrington, reports that the rainfall during August was 4.25 inches. There were 13 wet days and the heaviest fall was 1.75 inches on Tuesday, August 10. Tenders are called for a 5 years’ lease of the Carterton Racing Club’s course of 102 acres with or without the use of the cottage. Tenders will close with the secretary, Mr H. Mortensen, on September 8.
