INDOOR BASKETBALL

WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION’S COMPETITIONS LANCERS WIN SENIOR CONTEST. AFTER PLAYING EXTRA TIME. The Wairarapa Interhouse Association’s indoor basketball competition was brought to a close last night when the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium was crowded with spectators. In the senior section, Lancers beat C. Smith's by 8 points to 4 and met Cody's in the final. After a hard, willing game, Lancers won by 14 points to 12. Extra time had to be played as the teams were 10 all at the call of time. The game was ably refereed by Corporal K. Mitchell, R.N.Z.A.F. and Mr S. Geary. The chairman of the management committee, Mr G. Daubney, thanked the members of the public for their support, Mr W. Flaws of the St. John Ambulance for his work, and the Interhouse committee for its work during the season. Special reference was made to the excellent work put in by Messrs F. Stains (time-keeper), G. Davis (scorer), and L. Askew (team steward). Mr L. B. Maunsell, president of the association, presented the cups and certificates to the winning teams, who were: —Junior, Borthwick's; senior B, Cathie’s A; and senior, Lancers. Mr Maunsell said the game was a healthful sport which fostered the spirit of comradeship. The aid of the men from the branches of the forces in refereeing was commended by Mr Maunsell. Cheers were given for the runnersup in the competition. Lancers, who scored a well deserved win in the senior championship, were runners-up for the three previous seasons. A minute’s silence was observed for the captain of Cathie’s team in her bereavement. Invitation games resulted: —Cathie’s B beat Mac Duff’s B, 7-2; United beat Woolworth’s, 9-5; Rangers B drew with Hansell’s B 5-5: Cathie’s A beat McKenzie’s, 20-5; Hansell’s beat Garages, 16-2; W.F.C.A. beat Transport, 17-0; Rangers A beat Borthwick's, 18-4.
