VALUABLE SUPPLIES
FROM FRENCH NORTH AFRICA. ALREADY BEING RECEIVED BY ALLIES. The United States have already received 350,000 tons of cobalt and manganese from French North Africa. It is expected that they will receive regularly 500 tons of cobalt a month, as well as appreciable quantities of manganese. The first 10,000 tons of manganese from French West Africa have been shipped to the United States. The next consignment, 20,000 tons, will be shared between Great Britain and the United States. Important quantities of other raw materials from French North and West Africa will follow. Our gain through the opening of the French African markets is Germany’s loss. That country was receiving 1,500,000 tons of phosphates a year from Africa. In 1942, Germany had received from French North Africa 250,000 tons of mineral ores of high qualityShipments of fruit and vegetables to Marseilles totalled over 300.000 tons in a year, of which Germany took 80 per cent.
