RESISTANCE TO NAZIS
BECOMING WIDESPREAD IN FRANCE. IN SPITE OF TERRORISM. Reading between the lines of news items in the Gorman-controlled newspapers of France one gets a fair idea of how widespread and general resistance to the Germans is becoming. The “Depcehe de Toulouse” in a recent issue carried details of proceedings of the Court of Appeal at Toulouse, when a farmer was sentenced to death in his absence for being guilty of sabotage and threats of murder. The farmer had taken to the mountains, where one can imagine he is far from being alone. Two alleged accomplices were sentenced to terms of imprisonment. At the same sitting the court sentenced two printers to prison for printing “subversive pamphlets.” At Thonon, the “Petit Dauphinois” announced, a warrant had been issued against one Bini Vailed, accused of the assassination of a Garde Mobile and his companion. “In this connection,” the paper adds, “the public is reminded that it is a question of a cowardly assassination, and not a scuffle in which the policeman was accidentally hit. In such circumstances,” the paper concludes, significantly, “nothing can justify help given to the assassins by misinformed persons.” The Court of Appeal at Nimes, reports the “Petit Marseillais,” has sentenced Amadar Alvarez to 20 years’ hard labdur —for “Communist activities.”
