PIRINOA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Pirinoa Women’s Institute held I its monthly meeting in the hall. Miss I Atkinson presided over a very large attendance, which included visitors from Martinborough.

The president submitted a report of the proceedings of the Conference held at Gisborne, and on the motion of Mrs Spicer, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.

A presentation was made to Mrs Spicer, and in doing so Mrs Atkinson spoke of the great assistance given to the Institute by Mrs Spicer for a period of three years as president and as a member. They regretted exceedingly that she was about to leave the district where she had spent all her life. Not only had Mrs Spicer worked assiduously for the Institute, but she had also taken a most prominent part in other social activities of the district. The president then presented Mrs Spicer with a handsome hanging mirror and wished her a happy and prosperous stay in her new home. Mrs Spicer feelingly responded. The members then sang “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Mrs Trevor Hume gave a demonstration of smocking, which was most interesting. Competitions were won by Mrs S. Mclntosh and Mrs Lovegrove, with Mesdames O’Brien and Seward second, respectively. The hostesses were Mesdames Swainson, Lovegrove and McDonald. Enjoyable Concert., The Martinborough concert party gave a most enjoyable programme of songs, sketches and dancing in the local hall, and those who attended were rewarded by a high class performance—indeed. the company possesses some outstanding talent and should achieve further successes. At the conclusion of the concert, Mr Lovegrove congratulated the party on their entertainment, which was greatly appreciated by the audience. He, hoped that at a future date they would again honour the district with another performance. Miss Chris Wall replied. The party, which comprises young ladies from Martinborough, is raising ; money for patriotic purposes. ' Personal Items. Aircraftman D. Didsbury has been visiting relatives here. Mrs Taurau returned to Dannevirke on Wednesday. I Misses L. Hutchison and B. Sutton * were visitors to Carterton for a few i days. Miss Mary Riwai is spending a holi- ■ day with her parents. 1
