HARASSED RETREAT
OF GERMANS FROM SICILY LUFTWAFFE DEFEATED WITH HEAVY LOSSES. IN ATTEMPT TO KEEP WAY CLEAR. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.25 p.m.) LONDON. August 22. “South of the wrecked and chaotic Italian marshalling yards, the bulk of General Schatel’s German divisions from Sicily are now struggling northwards,” says the “Daily Mail’s” Algiers correspondent. “The Germans have between 200 and 300 miles to go before they can link up with the Germans massing on the River Po. The efforts of picked Luftwaffe squadrons to keep the way clear for Schatel’s retreat have failed. FockeWulf 190 s and the famous yellow-nosed Messerschmitt 109 s have suffered heavily at the hands of Allied bombers and escorting fighters. In three days of air battle, the Luftwaffe lost nearly 100 planes in combat and dozens more damaged. The Allied losses were about 35.”
