NEED OF POPULATION

APPRECIATED BY GOVERNMENT.

PRIME MINISTER’S REPLY TO DEPUTATION. (British Official Wireless.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The dangers of a declining population were stressed by. the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) today, when he received a deputation from the Dominion Settlement Association. The deputation asked for an immediate investigation of a proposal to bring to New Zealand war orphans from Europe and for the setting up of a commission to make a long-range survey of organised immigration possibilities. The deputation also suggested taxation exemption to encourage larger families, as immigration was only a temporary expedient. Mr Fraser said that even with immigration the country would perish if young married couples did not realise their responsibilities of parenthood. The first concern of the Government was rehabilitation, but that did not preclude attention being given to immigration.
