LIVING COSTS
VERY HIGH IN SWITZERLAND. LETTER FROM BRIGADIER HARGEST. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, August 21. Brigadier Hargest, writing to a friend from Berne, states: “We are well, but the prospects for an immediate homecoming are not good. We have plenty of everything here, but living is appallingly dear. Clothes and food seem the dearest items, but they manage their economy so there is no shortage. For some years before the war every household was ordered to lay in stores and this is bearing fruit today. “I am greatly interested in farming here, which, while different from ours, is basically much the same. I have visited a lot of farms, dairy factories and sawmills, and for three weeks worked with an old peasant farmer getting in his hay. They are good farmers, careful, industrious and clean, and I learned a good deal from rtiy man in spite of the language difficulties. Everyone works hard for long hours. That is where they beat us. New Zealand will need to adopt new ideals if we are to keep up in the race.”
