CHILD NEGLECTED

MAORI WOMAN SENT TO GAOL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE, August 20. A sentence of nine months’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed on Mereaira Tiopira, a Maori woman, aged 25, by Mr Justice Blair in the Supreme Court today on a charge of unlawful ill-treatment or neglect of her two-year-old niece, who died on May 28. His Honour said the least term he could impose in the circumstances was 12 months in prison, but the term would be reduced by the period she had spent already in custody.
